The new 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 was recently named the 2022 World Car of the Year. This new Hyundai model also won World Car Design of the Year and World Electric Vehicle of the Year. It’s only the second time that the Hyundai Motor Group has won World Car of the Year honors, with Kia Telluride winning the award in 2019. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has also won “Car of the Year” awards at competitions in Britain and in Germany.
Hyundai keeps winning awards worldwide
The World Car Awards were originally known as “The North American Car and Truck of the Year” (NACTOY) awards. Hyundai was a NACTOY winner last year with the Hyundai Elantra sedan named as one of the North American Car and Truck of the Year award-winners for 2021. Buyers in Hickory NC might appreciate knowing that the jury for the World Car awards consists of more than 100 respected journalists from 33 countries.
Some of the criteria for winning a World Car of the Year award
Selection for the World Car of the Year honor is conducted by secret ballot. The jury evaluates vehicles from all over the world based on eight criteria, including Performance, Value, Occupant Environment, Safety, Emotional Appeal, Innovation and Environment Market Significance. To illustrate the high quality of World Car winners, the Mercedes-Benz EQS was selected as the 2022 World Luxury Car of the Year.
Competition for the World Car award was intense
Finalists for the 2022 World Car of the Year award were the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Kia EV6 along with the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. Although the other electric vehicles in the final group were clearly exceptional vehicles, the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 out-scored the competition in all eight judging categories.
